Walter Hoppe Shelly Dawn Merrill Frey Walter was a true perfectionist. His great love and admiration was mining, but at the same time he had an overwhelming desire to protect the environment. For instance, many years ago, outside his lonely miner's cabin in Alta, he planted flowers around an old tree stump that had been destroyed by weather, possibly mining, etc. One day when there was a ferocious snow storm absolutely Walter was trying to find his way back to his cabin when suddenly this same old gnarled tree stump he had so lovingly surrounded with flowers in the early Spring suddenly appeared and he was able to find his cabin. Born in Celle, Germany June 19, 1908 to August and Sophia Hoppe.

His mother died when he was only two-years-old, leaving his father, a Red Cross worker, with the awesome responsibility of raising this little boy. August Hoppe died at a time when Europe was on the brink of a disastrous world. Walter was an orphan. There were some happy times in Walter's very difficult childhood. One of the greatest times he could remember was going with other children to the famous Hartz Mountains in Germany and visiting the remarkable mining achievements.

When he finally came to the United States and Salt Lake City, the thrill of seeing the Wasatch much lie the Hartz knew he had found home. Walter was not only a music devotee and environmentalist, but an avid drawer and record keeper of the many tunnels and mines of Alta. He has written a complete mining history of Alta that is extremely accurate in every detail completely devoid of dramatic innovations or questionable origin. No other Alta mining history can compare with these drawings. Director, officer and participant in the active promotion of many silver mines in Utah including Alta United Mines, the historic Horn Silver Mines, Gunsite Oil and Gas, but his greatest love was Alta, Utah.
