The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

I THE PLAIN DEALER, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1977 'Festival of Old and New' performed well at Akron By Robert Finn Music critic Somehow it was fitting that Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire" should be featured on the opening program of a new concert series called "Festival of the Old and the New" down at the University of Akron Monday night. The Schoenberg song-cycle, performed in Guzzetta Recital Hall by members of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble with mezzo Barbara Martin, is now at retirement age (65), but it still falls strangely on many an ear. It was preceded on this program by two much younger works: "Breakfast Rhythms I and II" (1976) by Joan Tower, and Richard Wernick's "Kaddish-Requiem," a piece inspired the antiVietnam protest movement of the early 1970s. In the Wernick and Schoenberg scores the program also served to introduce, in mezzo Martin, a singer who looks like a major young vocal talent. Arthur Weisberg, the ensemble's longtime leader, led a performance of "Pierrot" that at times had an almost classical air about it.

Miss Martin did the sprechstimme in something much closer to dramatic declamation than to singing, which is also of course appropriate. She dwelt almost lovingly on certain key words in the text, sometimes murmuring tonelessly, sometimes operating in a high-pitched giggle, sometimes whispering melodramatically.

This was an expert stint of "acting with the voice." There were serious problems of balance, between Miss Martin and the five instrumentalists. In soft sections she could be easily heard but the minute things got busy or the dynamic level rose above mezzo-forte she became largely inaudible. In particular, pianist Gilbert Kalish was guilty of blotting the lady out in his loud passages. Miss Martin proved her worth as a straight singer in the final pages of the Wernick "KaddishRequiem," where her superb singing of a disjunct and difficult yet highly expressive setting of excerpts from the Latin requiem text rescued Wernick's piece from gimmickry. The rest of the work, which involves quotes from Brahms, Lassus and Palestrina, seemed trendy and tiresome.

Miss Tower's "Breakfast Rhythms," for clarinet and five players, was a cerebral academic essay that got nowhere in expressive terms for all its obvious technical difficulty. It was full of jagged splatters of sound, athematic and totally dissonant (except in the last couple of pages), and seemed to resist the listener's approach instead of inviting him into it. The performances, as is usual with Weisberg's fine group, were assured and technically outstanding. Instrumentalists onstage included flutist Paul Dunkel, clarinetist Arthur Bloom, violinist Jean Ingraham, cellist Chris Finckel, pianist Gilbert Kalish, and percussionists Raymond Desroches and Claire Heldrich.
