What happened with Office Depot? ›

In 2020, the retail chain announced its plans to close or consolidate a number of stores and to cut 13,100 jobs by the end of 2023. From the beginning of 2020 to January 2023, 327 locations nationwide were shuttered, per company reports.

OfficeMax is an American office supplies retailer founded in 1988. As an independent chain, it was the third-largest office supply retailer in the United States. Following a 2013 merger, it is currently a brand and subsidiary of Office Depot.

ODP says that it will continue to operate as a single company for now with both consumer and B2B focuses, and will do so under its recently-completed organizational transformation into four organizations focused on retail, B2B, supply chain, and digital commerce areas.
