Dec laughed when the first B-17 eat down on British airdrome. They said the couldn't take it that he would be tucker for the Fock Wulf 190 and the Messerschmitts, that the needed air cannon instead of those machine guns, that her bomb load wasn't heavy enough to make her useful In the European theater. But their laughter turned to cheers when the B-17 finally went into action, with American crews persuing American tactics, over France. And today the B-17, which you like to call the Flying Fortress, is a fair haired girl of the air wars over here. The B-17 has proved she can take It and give It There isn)t.

the equal of the heavy British Lancaster as a bomb-carrier. For normal night raids the Lancaster loads about eight tons of bombs, the Fortress considerably less. But as a daytime precision bomber, the Fort has proved a perfect complement to the R.AT.'s gigantic night bombers. The Fort is said to be a bit more maneuverable than the' Lancaster though, with equally light bomb loads, their cruising speeds are about the same 180 miles sn hour. On gun power as on strength of construction, the Fortress is considered to be the better plane.

FIRST MODELS VULNERABLE Early criticism of the B-17's developed from the unhappy performance of seven of the big American ships over Boulogne in 1941. Five of those seven were shot down in flames while trying high altitude bombing from 30,000 feet. In fairness to those early Forts, they were flown by British crews, unfamiliar with the niceties of Amer lean big planes. They also were under-gunned. At that time there I were no caliber JO Brownings in 4he tail of the plane, so it was extremely vulnerable when attacked from the rear.

Later B-17E's overcame this fault just as now the bomb capacity of the new Boeings is being increased to match or nearly match the Lan caster and the new German Heinkels. if for everybody smart, practi laaau ion U.S. Navy Volunteers The Following Men Have Enlisted In the U. Upshur, Glade- 241 242 QOtlOSj Fom time immemorial, war and the progress of surgery and medicine have gone forward hand in hand. In the emergency of the dressing station and the field and base hospitals, life-saving measures of historic importance have been devised. Out of pain has grown surcease, and often the wounds of war have brought new life, new hope, to the populations of the 'world. It is in large part with this thought that Longview and its citizenry will observe the dedication of the great Harmon Hospital here.

The City is honored to be the site of this impressive federal institution. But beyond that is the producer realization that Longview is to be identified with the aims and purposes of the hospital, and with what it ultimately will achieve in science and humanitarianism. Some day, American veterans, wounded in this war, will again go their free and unhampered way about the world because of the healing servics they found at Harmon Hospital here in Longview -some who might not have lived but for what this institution was able to do in their behalf others who might have lived under grave handicaps that were ultimately removed by the skill of Harmon surgeons. The honor fsr Longview, therefore, lies not alone in being the appointed site for Harmon Hospital, but rather in the opportunity to be identified with the magnificent purposes for which it was built and the great contributions to humanity which it certainly must make. Our Appreciation to The Contractors and Engineers on Harmon General for a good job well done.
