One of the downside of switching from individual contributor to management as a software engineer is that it becomes increasingly difficult to get a new role the higher you climb the corperate ladder. There are more vacancies for Software engineers than for managers.SO IT IS NOT A BAD THING TO BE AN IC FOR THE WHOLE OF YOUR CAREER.

We're software engineers. We have a four year degree. But since we work in the backend, we can't even build you a website. What software developers do I enjoy hiring? That’s easy. The ones with an engineering mindset. They think how to solve the problem in many ways. And can make the most balanced decision in a given situation. I like to call them engineers who think in systems. Often issues in tech are discouraging and we start to sulk about it. ”That can’t be hotfixed” ”The database drives me nuts” ”Unexpected failure before the deadline is just what I need today” When we put feelings aside and go deeper to solve the issue, it gets easier.
