I Cheated On K-Drama (1)

I cheated on K-drama. Ok. I said it. IT'S ALL TEPPY'S FAULT! SHE MADE ME DO IT! I have a co-worker who begged and pleaded with me (kind of like the way Teppy begged and pleaded with me about watching just 1 episode of Boys Over Flowers way back when...uh...way back when before I was addicted to K-drama, and then Korea, and then chopjae and tofu from HMart and then spending a boat load of money to go see Korea in person....yeah...way back then) to watch Grand Hotel, a Spanish mini series that takes place at the turn of the 20th century in Spain, in a big ol, well, for lack of better words, GRAND freaking hotel! And it is goooooooood. OMO OMO! It has the crazy ass wicked mother, the corrupt relationships, the dysfunctional siblings, the love triangle, and of course, the never ending DRAMA. I'm currently 13 episodes into a 66 episode run. This far outweighs any of the dramas I have ever watched....with Boys Over Flowers being the longest I have ever sat through. I honestly don't know how they can continue to drag out the plot and the character relationships that long. I will continue to watch, albeit slowly, as I only cheated on K-drama because OF Teppy. It's all Teppy's fault. READ ON.

Several weeks ago, I asked Teppy if she could recommend a good drama to watch. I had been on hiatus for a while, as watching k-drama sucks me into a depressive vortex upon completion. It's that waking up from a love dream depression when I have to go back to my real life with real problems that sends me spiraling into doom . K drama removes me from the mundane of every day life and takes me to my happy place...the land of kpop and hanboks...and oppas and soju, and dukbokki and anorexic people. Whenever I end a drama, I need some time to decompress my emotions before I can jump back in. Rebound if you will. Kind of like a manic-depressive state I purposely and knowingly put myself through but then need to climb out of. AND IT ISN'T EASY. Why do I do this several times a month and therefore too many times a year? Well, for the LOVE STORIES. That's what. Yeah, I'm digging my Spanish drama, but LISTEN TO ME PEOPLE. THE KOREANS ARE HANDS DOWN THE BEST PRODUCERS OF LOVE STORIES EVER. It's that love story that sucks me in and makes me want more. Forget Disney and Grimm and whoever else writes about Cinderellas and prince charmings. It's the Korean people who know how to tell stories. LOVE STORIES. The KOREANS. NOT THE GERMANS. NOT THE SPANIARDS, NOT THE AMERICANS. Anyhow, back to this being Teppy's fault and me asking her to recommend a good drama. She tells me to watch 20 Again, that unbeknownst to me, was an "in progress" drama. I have NEVER watched an in-progress drama. I prefer to sit through drama marathons and watch all 16-18 episodes in 1 weekend. (Man, I LOVE my weekends!). Because I was only able to watch 4 episodes at the time, (AND LISTEN TO ME! I WILL NEVER START AN IN-PROGRESS DRAMA AGAIN. IT'S TOO HARD) I had to find a way to pass the time. So, I caved in to my co-worker and started watching Spanish drama.

I have to admit having the Spanish drama is a good distraction to help me get through each week until 2 new episodes of 20 Again come out on Fridays and Saturdays on Dramafever and Dramacool. But I'll say it again, K dramas are WAY better than anything I have ever watched. And 20 Again? WOW!! I love it. I love it because I can relate. I really like the dramas that have main characters that are close in age to myself. That's why I really liked Gentleman's Dignity too. Does that mean I don't like k-dramas with younger people? HELLLLL NOOOO! My top 2 Kdramas EVER are Boys Over Flowers and Moon Embracing the Sun. I also REALLY like You are Beautiful (and have the soundtrack for all 3 on my ipod!) But it's the ones with older people that hold a special place in my heart. I haven't seen Winter Sonata....I am sure I will like it too, but I am venturing a guess that it will be young people.

So the purpose of this blog is basically to admit that I cheated but the grass isn't greener on the Spanish side, and that it's Teppy's fault I cheated and I will never watch an in-progress drama again and that I really like dramas with characters my age but I still like dramas with younger people. Oh, and I still go to Wikipedia and read about all of the actors while I'm watching the dramas and do the math to compare our ages so if we ever meet in in real life, I can fantasize that we could really fall in love and date (WHAT? my current husband you say?--pshaw!--like I'll EVER really meet a k-drama star or let alone star in one myself.)

For now, here is one of my random photos from Korea. It was an older in love couple that we saw at Namsan Tower. The reason I took the photo is that I didn't see many older "in-love" people while we were there and I was happy to see folks over 30 showing public displays of affection. They were there with another couple about the same age and they were taking pics of each other. Ahhhh, middle aged love! Bring on the 40 year old oppas!
