Good Earth announces recall for 1.2M rechargeable lights following death (2)

Good Earth lights recall overview:

  • Who: Good Earth Lighting recalled more than 1.2 million rechargeable integrated lights.
  • Why: The light’s battery can overheat, posing a fire and burn risk.
  • Where: The Good Earth lights recall is active in the United States and Canada.

Good Earth Lighting is recalling more than 1.2 million rechargeable integrated lights, as the batteries can overheat and pose a fire and burn risk.

The recall notice was published June 6 on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website. It says the move comes after one person died and another was treated for smoke inhalation due to the lights overheating and causing a house fire last year.

“Good Earth Lighting is aware of nine additional reports of lights overheating, including six that resulted in fires and property damage,” the recall states.

The recall involves more than 1.2 million rechargeable lights with model numbers starting with RE1122, RE1145, RE1362 and RE1250. About 37,800 sets of the recalled lights were also sold in Canada. The model number is printed on a white sticker on the back of the light.

Company offers free replacement light, but no refund

According to the recall, the risk comes when the recalled light’s battery overheats, which can ignite the light’s plastic housing.

Consumers should immediately stop using the lights and contact Good Earth Lighting to receive a free replacement light. The company is not offering a refund.

Consumers are eligible for a free light of at least equal value to the purchase price of the recalled light, including shipping at no charge, the company said.

Anyone seeking an exchange will be asked to write the date and initial next to the model number on the back of the light, and write “Recalled” on the front of the light. Consumers will also be asked to upload photos here.

The recalled lights were sold at hardware and home improvement stores nationwide, including Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, Meijer, and Menards, and online at Goodearthlighting.com, Amazon.com, Lowes.com and QVC from Oct. 2017 through Jan. 2024 for about $20 for the single unit and about $35 for the bundle.

Last year, DM Merchandising recalled around 34,600 Bunkhouse and Lotsa Lites Connectable Mini String Lights over concerns their bulbs can overheat when the string lights are plugged directly into an outlet, creating burn and fire hazards.
