This was my favorite area hike during my visits. It’s challenging but not overly so, and the reward of seeing the Stiles Falls up close is unbeatable. Plus, there are plenty of spots along the way to stop and take in the surrounding nature or have a picnic lunch. There is no cellular service, so be sure to download your Alltrails map before you arrive at the trailhead.

This one-mile loop takes visitors around an eight-acre pond across dirt paths and boardwalks.

Pack a picnic and enjoy a serene afternoon by the water’s edge, surrounded by towering trees and the soothing sounds of chirping birds. A morning hike here is also highly recommended, as the trail offers glimpses of rare bird species and other wildlife.

Bike Huckleberry Trail

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Huckleberry Trail is a must-visit destination. This 12-mile paved rails-to-trails system runs from Blacksburg to Christiansburg and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and countryside. If you need a bike rental, Bike Barn offers rentals and they are who I rented from my last trip.

There is also a small loop hiking trail across from the park for those wanting to explore the area on foot. There are also picnic tables in this area if you want to bring a lunch or just stop for a break and take in the scenery.

Zeppoli’s Italian Restaurant

Zeppoli’s is a charming local establishment serving up traditional, scratch-made Italian dishes. Their menu includes classics like spaghetti and meatballs, as well as more unique options like smoked salmon bruschetta and vodka crab rigatoni.

I had the housemade gnocchi and it was absolutely delicious. The homemade pasta melted in my mouth, and the rich sauce had just the right amount of tanginess to balance out the creaminess. It was definitely worth trying and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a tasty meal.

Blacksburg Tavern

This cozy spot serves up traditional southern fare family style. Located in the oldest horse on Main Street within the town’s original Sixteen Squares, Blacksburg Tavern serves up a delicious regional farmer’s menu with crispy fried chicken, meatloaf, beef brisket, mac & cheese, green beans, flaky biscuits, and baked apples.

Gillies

Situated in the heart of downtown Blacksburg, Gillie’s offers a delightful array of seafood and plant-based dishes crafted with fresh, seasonal ingredients and a dash of culinary creativity. From hearty salads bursting with vibrant flavors to housemade black bean burgers, there’s something to tantalize every palate.

This is one of my favorite local restaurants when I visit the area. It reminds me of my grandmother’s cooking and the food always hits the spot. One word of warning, come hungry because the portions are huge! But don’t worry, you can always take home leftovers for a second meal.
