I spotted my first rx-8 today at a dealer. I made my parents stop so I could look at it. :D The dealer was closed, so no test drive. It was a black 6 speed with the touring package (HID, DSC, a couple other things) and came to $31k and change with a $1k dealer markup. They also had a blue one on the showroom floor which I liked better than the black. My offical judgement... its ugly. Too angular and high-techy. I hope they do a better job with the NC and FE. I much prefer the smooth sexy lines of the NB and FD. Hopefully they will update the FD's styling for the FE and not start from scratch. To it's credit, I think that with the wedge front end, the RX-8 would look better with zero fender gap.

There was a shinsen miata setting next to the black rx-8. Honestly, if I had cash in hand, I would have taken the miata! ('cept it was an automatic) BTW, the shinsen was $28k! That's just stupid. You think mazda would have learned from the deadly '90s japanese sports car price creep. I think they almost have to make the NC cheaper just to keep from stepping on the RX-8's toes.

Well, I think that's all of my whining about Mazda for now. Maybe they'll hire me and I'll straighten everything out for them! :p

Dream2Race

1st August 2003, 09:30

So thaaaat's what the Shinsen is. :D

It won't be long before you start seeing an RX-8 at the MSCC autocrosses. ;)

Hey guys, let's pretend for a minute I was offered a great buy on an awesome car, and wanted to sell my Miata. You think there'd be any takers around here? Just curious.....

-Tony

Neo Masamune

1st August 2003, 10:26

I'd buy your car if I could sell mine and get financing, but with my little credit fall-out after loosing my job a couple years back, I doubt I can get financing. :)

-Neo

Tony Orlando

1st August 2003, 10:54

Hm.... I have the opportunity to buy a killer car real cheap. The only thing is, I'd only get 13 in trade for mine. (clean book) With everything I've added to the car, I'd like to see 16K, which even though it wouldn't cover what I've put into the car, I think would be a fair price for a 200 HP 10AE with low miles.

I really don't have any desire to sell my car, but it's one of those situations where you have to consider it. Oh, what to do?.....

1st August 2003, 16:29

New intake in! I'm leaving work now, so I'll be back in two hours with driving impressions.

While the car was in the air, we also found the buzzing noise from the rear: A cracked weld on my RB muffler. That suprised me, coming from RB, but a quick spot weld fixed it. That should be good for about 10HP. :D ;)

Wow. I can't believe I'm actually going to jinx myself by saying this, but I think my idle dip is gone.

Not one time on the way home, where I usually have 20 or 30 dips between O-Town and Leesburg. I guess the third time's the charm for the guys at VF and their intake designs, because it's smooth as silk now. Yayyyyyy......

BTW, while I had them on the phone today, I worked out a package deal with the guys at RB. Clutch, PP, Lightweight FW, both bearings and a tranny seal. Anyone interested can shoot me an email. Cheeeeep.

Hey guys, I just caught up on all 400? post. Where have I been? I've just grad. with a 96 in my real estate class, but more importantly we just had our baby boy, Chase. I've missed all the Miata talk. I would like to let you know that if your ever looking for an east side restaurant Raptor's in Avalon Park has "Wing Night" every monday(don't forget the cruise course).
Rob
p.s. Tony the only car I could ever imagine getting out of a Miata for is the Lotus Elise, don't tell me you've found one early?!

Tony Orlando

1st August 2003, 23:43

heh heh.... I wish. Actually, a buddy of mine can get me an RX-8 at cost. (you gotta love that whole "networking" thing....) and I at least needed to explore the idea. After all, while I may be ambivalent about its looks, the RX-8 is one heckuva vehicle, with some serious mod potential. (hello? Racing Beat?) Can't hurt to look into it.

RetroMiata

1st August 2003, 23:51

I can deal with that after all it's a Mazda.
Before I ever fell in love with the Miata all I wanted was an RX7. I still long for a perfect black R1.

Tony Orlando

1st August 2003, 23:58

I think that fond memories of my 85 GSL-SE are toying with my emotions. RB header and exhaust, Lightweight FW, and that beautiful rotary whir..... Part of me misses it. Plus, since my Dad owns a '72 RX2 with a supercharged, street ported 13B, he's been goading me to get a "real man's" car. (i.e., a rotary. He doesn't think Miatas are girly)

Dream2Race

2nd August 2003, 00:29

The 1st & 2nd gen RX-7s are serious fun to drive! Those ricers gave them a bad image in the late 90s.

I still really love the 3rd gen twin turbos. Mmmmm... :p

RX-8's are looking less and less attractive in my opinion, especially with this whole "Mazda lied about the HP" issue happening AGAIN. If you havn't heard, many people who've made the purchase had the car dynoed. On average, they're putting down 180hp to the wheels. That's 20+HP less than factory claimed power, and 30+ hp less than it SHOULD be placing considering the flywheel's rated to 247HP (factory). Mazda engineer head's are claiming the car won't make full power till it's completely broken in. I, and MANY people here, think that a full 20HP gain off of break-in is just not going to happen.

They pull this shieot again with the NC Miata, I'm getting off the Mazda boat. All their recent performance models aren't living up to expectations, and it's getting rediculous.

I want a convertable anyhow, so the next car's going to 90% be an S2000.

-Neo

EDIT: Only way there's going to be a 20+ HP gain is if the ECU's programmed to change the fuel curve at some point. Out of the box, they're running RICH.

Will it ever stop raining?
Today in Winter Park I saw a blue RX8 across the intersection, and I was quite intrigued with it's evil eyed glare. The side view was not as evil(sporty), but the back end was cool.
Now I know what I want, the front & back of the RX8 on the mid-section of a 350Z(love the side view, but don't like the front & back of the 350Z).
....oh I'll just stick with the Miata, how easy!

I'll have to try to find it again, but yes, supposedly the RX8 runs differently after a predetermind amount of miles. I forget exactly what gets changed, but I believe the rev limiter is one of them. I'll have to find the info again to be sure though.

 Well, :( I will not be able to make it once again on Monday, since i am working all day/night.

There might be a new person showing up at the meet. He wrote a message in my guest book on the cardomain site asking where/when we meet. I gave him the info, keep a look out. I think he drives a 96...

Matt, I don't know if I'll make it on Saturday. I might have to drive down to Miami. It has not been confirmed yet... Sorry. :(
But I got my fingers crossed that I don't... :D

Tony, I thought you already had a LW flywheel from RB...? Are you just upgrading your clutch (just replace the steel insert) or something? Don't bother with RB clutch, get ACT!! Its the best and most reliable clutch for the Miata (especially high hp ones)...

Nope, I'm running a factory clutch/PP/flywheel. I had an ACT on my old Miata, and I have a bad taste in my mouth about them since the PP cracked. Three days with no car because your one day old PP broke will do that to you.

I'm sitting around doing nothing since I'm on vacation, so I'll be posting some new pictures of my intake on my Cardomain site later.

Whoo Hoo :) Model year 2000 S2K are dirt cheap now too, pisses me off when I think how much I paid for mine 10 months ago. There is even one on the florida board on S2ki.com with 9000 miles for 23K, I've seen them as low as 19K, with very low miles. I'll see ya'll tonight. I was hoping to come in a slightly lower S2000, but my springs never came in. :(

I have some "bad" news brought on by some major important choices I've had to make in the last few days in my planning over the next couple months. It requires me to limit my spending habits for anything extra to fund a trip to Atlanta for a very important convention called AWA of which I should have an artist's booth at, last weekend of September.

Unfortunately, this trip is going to cost me upwards of $500+ for hotel stay, supplies, materials, admissions, space and survival. In addition to that, I will need to get some new shoes for the car to survive said trip.

What this means is financially, there's no way I will be able to make it to the R-Speed Open House. If I remember right, Patrick will be going later than the rest of the group, so I'm hoping Andrea will be able to tag with him for the trip.

Sorry, guys, I wish I could do it but this is much much more important to me as it'll have a huge impact on my career as an artist.

Thanks for the offer, but that'll end up being really expensive though....I mean I figure the trip overall will run about $150-$200 that weekend. After budgeting for the next couple months considering the con and whatnot, I can barely afford half that. :(

That stinks Aaron. Sorry to hear it. I can see how the convention would be much more important though. ;) In the meantime, everybody's bailing on the trip! :( I'm going by myself if I have do, darn it! :p I can't believe no one else wants to/can go. It's not like we're going to Montana or anything! :p FYI, on the way home I'll be cutting out just south of Atlanta to visit my friend for a few days. He may be interested in coming to the open house too. :D

Aaron, I do have a half worn tire to donate to the cause, if it'll save ya a few bucks. :) Ya might wanna get cheap used tires anyway if money's tight and you're gonna put a buncha highway miles on them. No sense wearing out new sticky ones. ;)

I'll address this at Bennigan's tonight, but for those who won't be there: I'm heading out to the dragstrip soon. Apparently (thanks, Gerald :D ) they only charge 10 bucks on Wednesdays at Speed World, so this Wed I might make a little trip to see how I hold up against the mullet crowd out in Bithlo.
All I'm getting these days are emails about 0-60 and 1/4 mi. times on my car, and I'm a little curious myself.

Anyone else out there who'd like to accompany me? Gerald, I've already read your PM, so I know you're in. Anyone?

RoadsterGuy99

4th August 2003, 19:55

We will be a no show tonight... somethings came up, unfortunately...

Dan, I am still planning to go to R-Speed...

Tony, they have always charged $10 to run on Wed. and Friday nights at SpeedWorld in Bithlo... just make sure to get there early (before the even open) to get the max runs possible... if not, you may pay $10 for just 1 or 2 runs... :( in the past I would be one of the first 15 cars in, by the end of the night I'd run at least 6-7 times, and that's with the domestics breaking down! :p

Tony Orlando

4th August 2003, 23:15

Why is it that I can't seem to pull out of Bennigan's without something getting in my way?? First cones, now a Kia! Some people have no business behind the wheel of a car...

Dan, Gerald, you guys missed the best show ever tonight:

Crazy Drunk Psycho Man!!!
What a riot.

It started amusingly enough as a drunk hobo on a bike pulled up and was staring silently at our cars. Then, out of nowhere, he becomes belligerent and starts shouting, "All you m-f-ers, I'll take you all on, I've got yachts...blahblah....quarter of a million dollars....blahablah..." We tried to ignore him, but then he started walking among our cars, staring at us, shouting the F word and telling us all how rich he is, and he'll take us all on. Several of us told him to "have a good night" and "take it easy", but it was looking like he was going to jump on us or our cars, so we ended up calling the cops to have him removed.
What great fun.

Once again though, we were outnumbered by S2Ks. We need a little Miata presence here, guys. Pretty soon we'll be deciding where to meet over on the S2K board....

Those sides are terrible. I think I'll stick to the Invader kit that can be found HERE (http://www.buethemotorsport.de/english_start.htm) It's FD goodness :)

Random discovery this morning going to work:

My Miata accellerates(sp?) from 80-100 MPH faster in 5th gear than it does in 4th. This is the oddity that is the 7 degree timing advance, I suppose...more torque at 4k rpms than at 5500. :)

Dunno where we're going to have the meet at....any suggestions?

EDIT: Let's do the Wunderbar. I'm not on Atkin's anymore, anyhow.

Hey Matt...

Is the Martin event still happening on Saturday? Considering all the rain we've had? And the possibility of rain in the middle of the race, I'd hate to pay for just two runs...

Just wondering...

Thanks

The only car I've been able to line up for Saturday is a 2003 SS Camaro (or is it 2002?). It will be fun, but it's no Z06! Still have a few more Z06 owners to propostion! :D

I'm going to route two of those aircraft grade tubing (like Tony's got) to the filter in hopes of providing cool air....or something similar at least. We can make a project out of it. (Dan? :p )

Okay here's the directons on how to get to this Monday's meeting place:

Wunderbar at West Oaks Mall in Ocoee.

Most of you all will be coming from the north or east side of town, so you're going to want to make your way to Hwy 408 (East/West Expwy) and head WESTBOUND towards Ocoee. When you come to the Good Holmes exit, you're getting close. The NEXT EXIT is for hwy 50(and CLARK RD), and is the final exit before you get on the turnpike heading north. This is going to put you on Clark Rd.....just cross 50 on Clark Rd. and you're there. Go to the southeast side of the mall where Dillards is, we'll park in a clearing there.

See you all there.

I've wrangled off work on Saturday, (next, not today) so I'm going to R-speed. :D Whether or not I drive up with you guys depends on when you're leaving. I work until 6 on Friday, and therefore wouldn't realy be roadworthy until 7PM. If you guys are leaving after that, we can caravan. If not, I'll go home and get a good nights sleep, then leave in the morning.

Sweet... Tony's going! Well, Patrick, Dan and myself are leaving Friday morning... with Aaron and Andrea leaving in the evening... Plans to be discussed tomorrow night!

On another note... I need to get my oil change, anyone care to lend a hand/place? I'm free Tues and Wed. after 6:30pm and free all day Thurs... I'll hate having to go pay a dealer for an oil change... :(

Tony Orlando

10th August 2003, 19:58

Wow. So far, I'm the only one who's posted today?

Dan, I have a question for you. I just installed a mini K+N on my crankcase vent, (like you've got) and now I've got a loud "whoosh!" when I shift at high RPMs. Did you get that too, or is it the boost in the engine escaping?

10AE 2344

10th August 2003, 20:44

Sweet Tony! The more the merrier! As for the noise, I haven't noticed anything like that. The only new air noise I have is the hiss from the main filter. Maybe you have a super secret hidden blow off valve! :D

Mark, Aaron, and anyone else... I'm always up for gettin dirty, and I'm free to work on stuff all this week, but I still live in an apartment. No garage

RoadsterGuy99

10th August 2003, 23:10

hey, i was the first to post today :p it has gotten rather slow... anyhoo, Tony - sounds like boost leaking, remember it's a positive crank ventilation that re-circulates itself... hey, don't you have some type of blow-off valve with the VF kit??

Dan - are you allowed to do maintainence work in your complex?? The only things I really need are mini-ramps (wood boards will do), a jack, and a pair o'jackstands...

Tony Orlando

10th August 2003, 23:30

I've got a post going in the power mods forum, because I can't get a straight answer about that Cranckcase ventilation hose. Does it suck air out of the intake into the cam cover, or does it blow air out of the cam cover and back into the intake? (I'm talking about the one on the driver's side, not the PCV valve.) Maybe one of you guys can help me on this one?

I have a recirculation valve that bypasses the SC at idle. It takes the air from the filter directly to the cross tube instead of running it through the compressor. It's pulled open at 12 or 15 psi of vaccuum. Once you press the throttle, and vaccuum goes below 12psi, then the valve closes and the air is routed through the SC.

PAW467

10th August 2003, 23:46

That vent Tony, is to prewarm air going into the intake. Most of those are connected before the air filter in the stock air box. Its really only effective in cold weather.

The sound your most likely hearing is the air coming out.

Sorry.. I've been busy this weekend. Autocross Sat day.. Then had a 'early' b-day party with some of my friends. Can someone say "please pass the advil". My head still hurts :D

10AE 2344

11th August 2003, 02:19

no, I'm not really supposed to do work in my complex, but they didn't complain when we dismantled Matt's suspension. :p I don't have ramps, jacks, or anything of the sort.

the crankcase vent is attached after the air filter. Pat, does the monsterflow use this still? I never noticed. Anyway, If it really does vent pressure into the intake, I wonder why the intake tube dosen't get gunky from crankcase oil.

I had some interesting conversations tonight. One girl asked me "is that your car?!?" "wow" "that's nice!" "what's your payments?"

Another (with a guy, after previous conversation) went like this: "aren't you the guy with the BMW?" "no, it's a mazda... miata" "oh, but it's really nice tho, right? not one of those old crappy ones?" "uh, yeah, it's kinda new." "sweet man"

I shoulda told the girl it was a porsche. :p Maybe I wouldn't be at home on the internet right now. BTW, it just ain't right to bring hot 16 yr olds to keg parties and not tell people they're 16. :ohno:

I'll be joining Pat in the Advil club in the morning. night kids :D

Bob

11th August 2003, 12:18

I don't think it sucks or blows, Tony. It's just there to allow any pressure build up in cam area to go somewhere. Putting it back into the intake is an environmental thing -- it works just as well with a filter arrangement on the CAM cover but it doesn't pass design environmental concerns.

I'm not familiar with the "prewarming" that is mentioned above. It's always been my understanding that the colder the air, the better unless it's a diesel.

Saw my first RX8 on the road on the way home from work. It was black...very pretty. Very quiet. I think I'm used to my car's noise though.

It's actually a tad bigger looking than I thought it'd be, in person. And it's not quite as wide as I pictured it either.

But it looked so silky clean in black. mmmmmmm......black :)

I need to bring this up....a valid argument why our group shouldn't leave friday night. I'm REALLY tired usually when I get out of work, which would be at 5:15pm. After that I'll drive up and pick up Andrea at around 6:00pm, then meet Tony around 6:45-7:00pm, we'll eat, then finally leave central florida around 8:00pm. The trip to Atlanta is 6:00+ hours. I don't want to be on the road till 2:00AM, I won't make it. No way.

Hence why we should leave on Saturday early AM, say around 6:00am in the morning. I mean, what are we going to gain by being there at 2:00am? We're going right to sleep, and won't wake till 11:00am-12:00am anyways.

Valid argument, no?

Got the kit today. All of my measurements and assumptions about the fit of the stripes were correct, except..... The location of the washer jets. Totally forgot about those. log on to the yahoo site... directions are in the files area ;)

It seems complicated, but really easy... basically turnpike -> I-75 -> I-475 bypass around Macon -> back onto I-75 -> (to Bypass downtown, head toward I-285 West toward Chattanooga, merging back to I-75) -> exit at GA-120/Marietta/Southern Tech/Roswell, head west on GA-120 then turn right onto Franklin, should see Hampton-Inn (455 Franklin Rd SE, Marietta, GA 30067)

Best thing, Delk Rd. is like 5 mins away... DAVE N BUSTERS!! :D

Does anyone know where I can get the best tire/wheel balance in Orlando?
Every time I finish an autocross, my wheels are out of balance.
I can't be chewing up that much rubber...?

When I get my balance done its good at low speed and horrible at high speed or vice versa...

I am in the market for new tires. I am between the Azenis and the new MXs; any thoughts?

I was planning to buy dedicated race tires (Hoosiers), but the thought of installing a hitch on my car is discouraging...

I'm glad you guys made it back alright, seemed like you had a lot of fun.
I missed out big time... :(

PAW467

19th August 2003, 13:49

Gerald..

Its most likely flat spots..no balancing will fix that. Its one of the dissadvantages about autocrossing on street tires.

I think your at the same point I am about puting a hitch on the car. Moss makes a good one I think. Honestly, its going to be the only solution to the problem.

AutoXRacer

19th August 2003, 13:58

But it looks so ugly!!! :(
Do you know how much it is? Is it the same one Bob P. uses?

My car feels so rough at 60-70mph and then 80-100mph. The whole sterring wheel vibrates (like it was out of balance)... :ohno:

So, you really think those are flat spots...?
That would totally suck!!! (can I say suck on Miata.net?)

PAW467

19th August 2003, 14:01

Aaron

No dice on the Azena's his suppler is out of them doesn't look like they'll be getting any anytime soon. Not sure why.

Heres your tire info:
tire 1: on ware markers
tire 2: it's a little bit better on the ware markers.

PAW467

19th August 2003, 14:13

LOL yes you can say suck.. "I think"

Umm I think Matt can answer that one. I think Bob P uses a different type. A hidden style.

I'd have to say thats where the vibe would come from. Only thinking out side of the box on this one tho.

Neo Masamune

19th August 2003, 14:38

Patrick, okay, those tires will easily last me till I can get ahold of a second pair to get them replaced, since I can only find two brand new ones in the orlando area. And I'm not telling anybody where they're at. :p

Trust me, Azenis grip good in the wet till they're close to completely bald, it's the compound of the rubber that attributes to that.

If I replaced them when they hit the wear markers, I'd have 5000 miles on them at best. That's REALLY sad.

I'm waiting to hear on the ES100's from my friend still though. I'll find out this afternoon.

Neo Masamune

Gerald, your tires are probably flat spotted pretty badly. Mine are, and flat spots over time on slightly unbalanced wheels (causing the 65 mph shimmy we all know and love) make for bigger and more noticeable flat spots.

I asked him what is was for and he said =it was for his 91 MR2 turbo. He invited me to check it out since I seemed interested. It had a real nice setup with a TEC 3. He said the car makes somewhere near 500hp and was running 812cc injectors, and it idled fine. I asked him where he got the work done with the TEC 3 and he said Grage Advance. I've heard of them and met some of the guys from the shop at my store but Its nice to know that there is someone who can deal with the TEC 3 around here. And it was all very clean! Now if I only had money for the Racing mazda kit complete with Tec 3 and injectors.

Street tires are harder to flat spot than people think. I doubt your tires are flat spotted. I think you're just being compulsive. ;)

Flat-spotting tires results from excessive wheel lockup, which I haven't really seen Gerald do while autocrossing. And it would take some SERIOUS wheel lockup to flat spot Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s cuz they're not a very soft compound.

Palmblad has something called a Tire Tail. Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure that's what it's called. It's not a hitch at all.

I have a hitch for Myata that is removable. Take it out when you're not using it by removing a pin.

Gerald, did you go back and finish reading your thread in the Performance Driving/Autocross forum? I revived it and a few more posts came in afterwards.

Just another quick comment about tires and autocrossing. Patrick said "my Toyos were toast due to autocrossing". With all due respect, you really didn't do very much autocrossing on those tires. Each set of tires that I've had have seen at least 1 autocross every month from the time they were mounted to the time they were dismounted. We're talking sometimes 3 autocrosses each month, and we're also talking a plethora of fun runs at each MSCC event. Each time I replaced the tires, sure they were worn and in most cases corded. A worn tire is a worn tire, whether it was worn from autocrossing or worn from 3 years of granny daily driving. All autocrossing will do is make them wear more quickly.

PAW467

20th August 2003, 23:15

Well, all I can say is that I learned on those toyos Matt. With less then 12K they were burned up and then some. And that was less then a year I had them. I think I did @ 5 Autocrosses on those.

Gerald has been also doing the practice session at SCCA. And learning on his tires as well. As from my experiance from just starting out. It was just an opinion.

10AE 2344

21st August 2003, 18:02

I'm down with Froggers, but it is even farther than Gators for those across town.

Warning: brain dump ahead!
While up at R-speed I bought a used lip spoiler that was already innocent blue mica (IBM). The paint on it is not in the best condition, but it is the right color. I figured I could just shoot it with a can of IBM spray from Tony's friend or towerpaint.com and all would be well. I installed the spoiler at my friend's up in atlanta because he has a garage and we had nothing better to do. Well, As most of you have pointed out at least once, my front bumper was poorly repainted the incorrect color before I bought the car. It was liveable before, but now it looks even worse, cause the lip spoiler and hood are the same and the bumper is wrong! :ohno: I'm usually all about the DIY, but I think painting the whole bumper is pushing my experience and facilities a bit. Especially since the pieces are plastic and the paint will probably need some kinda flexy additive. I've read about people who've sprayed their rocker panels or side skirts, etc, but the whole front bumper? From the digging I've done, about 300 bucks wouldn't be unreasonable for a professional job, but I can't really afford that and I just want the color to match. I'm left with many questions... Does the bumper have or need a clear coat? How long would this take a pro to do?(how long would I be without a bumper) Would my paint be faded enough to need color matched? How much cheaper would it be if I disassembled and sanded it? Is this something I could do? I guess calling shops for an estimate wouldn't hurt, but before I do, does anyone have experience painting stuff or know someone who paints stuff (for cheap :D )?

BTW, front clearance isn't as bad as I thought it would be with the new lip. OEM lip spoiler 5.125" clearance, Garage Vary lip spoiler 4.625": loss of .5" (and no, I can't measure to three decimal places. 1/8th = .125 :p ) I hadn't scraped the OEM lip since the OM meet at Bob's house where I about broke the thing off(april I think) so hopefully this won't be much worse.

Yep, that's where I thought it is. I should be there (late of course) as long as I get the Pit Patter done this weekend. :D

Rode in an RX-8 this afternoon! Really neat car! Handles great, and sounds sweet. Some cool styling, but a few features I didn't like. I think it'd look much better without the back doors. Also can't put in an aftermarket head unit as all the dash controls are integrated into one piece. I'm sure someone will figure out a fix for that though. Anyway, it may not have the power of the RX-7, but to say it's underpowered is slightly inaccurate. I guess it depends on your opinion of what power should feel like. It's certainly torquey. I had the opportunity to drive it but I didn't have time. I will next time though...since it was my friend who bought it. :D :D :D

AutoXRacer

22nd August 2003, 20:45

 Did you guys hear that the RX8 is underpower to what Mazda claimed...

Seems like Mazda did the same thing they did with the 2001 Miata. False horsepower claim. The RX8 has been dynoed @ 180rwhp; which means that its approximately 210hp at the flywheel instead of the 238-250hp that Mazda claimed...

So now the new owners of the RX8 will be recieving letters stating that Mazda will buy back the RX8 or issue a $500 debit card with free maintenance...

Hum, how can Mazda let that happen again!!!

Tony Orlando

22nd August 2003, 21:17

Yeah, we'll be hearing about this for a long time, that's for sure. In my opinion, if you buy a car without test driving it you're a fool. If the car goes fast enough on the test drive, buy it. Who cares about the numbers? Some people want a car that makes max torque at 2500 RPM, others want max HP at 7000 RPM. (S2K, anyone??) I guess what I mean is that you should buy a car based on a real life evaluation, not the numbers printed in the brochure. Anyone who does the latter deserves to get screwed. :)

RoadsterGuy99

22nd August 2003, 21:23

hrm... also think of all the emmissions crap that they put on USDM cars vs JDM cars... alas a loss of power... JDM Miata do make the claimed HP figures, just not here in the US...

i do find that in the US people are concerned about gas milage more than other countries.

aside from having to pay close to $5 for a gallon of gas in europe. I beleive that car taxes depend on the displacement of the engine and anything above or 2.0l is considered high.

Kompakt

23rd August 2003, 16:51

also forgot to mention.. that they start off with basic cars in europe. all the options that come standard on US market cars are to keep them in competition with the rest of the market.

Leather, Sunroof, Powerwindows, CDplayer...etc most ppl expect to have these on their new cars in US. But in europe.. you could buy a brand new bmw maybe with manual windows, clothseats, no sunroof, no tape.

its true though as far as customization, they have a lot more options than they do in the US.

I'm not sure about that. Kinda contradicts the SUV/Truck rage. Most of them get 15-18mpg on the highway and hold 30 gallons worth of gas. My roommate's Z74 goes through 28 gallons a week vs my 12.

The automatic RX-8's come with 210hp. I thought it was 207. So, autos get 210 and manuals get the 250.

Mark, that MXC show is a trip! I haven't ever laughed that hard at a TV show. Japan is wierd! I swear the contestants are drunk!

Matt, the bug & tar remover is some old Amway stuff I found in a cabinet while at home. It's the only stuff I've ever used that actually works. My friend from Atlanta's cars are covered with sap and he had a collection of bottles of worthless bug and tar removers. He'd used my stuff back in high school and asked if I could find him some. I need to figure out where/ from whom to get more.

Speaking of fuel economy, what's with gas prices? $1.60 for the cheap stuff?!? It even wasn't that bad back during the "war". I'm gonna start diluting it with water to stretch it out! Oh, wait... I bought gas from Racetrack... don't they already do that? :p

Maybe the gas prices will make people form new habits like consolidating trips, riding the bus, carpooling, and walking or riding bikes for short trips. On second thought, why bother! Oil grows on trees in America! Instead, lets bring back the 16 cylinder engine! You know, SUVs COULD be more efficient, but they need the torque of big displacement engines to get those 24" dubs a rollin'!

As far as options, I'll take the 300lb delete option. :D Too bad the Club Sport model wasn't a little more hardcore, a la M3 CSL or 360 Stradale.

Mazda is retarted for shafting us on claimed HP again! They need to regain the buyers trust by going the SRT-4 route and claiming actual wheel HP for all sporty cars from now on. ;)

 yeah, What the hell is going on with gas prices!!!!

By where I work, they are charging $2.09!!!!!
Thats outrageous!!!!!

Prices are once again increasing, I guess Bush doesn't care anymore, he has bigger worries now...

[/qb]
no concern for gas milage?? well then, explain all the hybrids that are coming out on the market, hrm?? [/QB]
Well, that is a government program given/offered to automakers for large sums of money (incentives/bonuses) for designing and selling energy efficient cars...

Now, how many people do you think will purchase those? Have you test driven one?
They are cows!!!
Now, there is a small population of people that don't care what they drive. All they want is a cheap form of transport/running cost.
But whos counting them... :p

Anyway, all I'm trying to say is that with all the turbo, recent increase in supercharged engines, the ever increasing HP in US marketed engines, and the size of cars; its seems like the US does not worry about marketing a fuel efficient car...

We do have the cheapest gas in the world...

Take your typical car buyer. Would they compremise comfort for fuel efficiency? Not many people want to drive econo boxes unless they are financially challenged...

SUVs are the perfect example... The bigger the better!!! Navigator, Sequoia, Suburban, Caddy SUV, etc.
And most of these engines are pushing high 200hp-300hp...

And these vehicles are selling like hot cakes!!
GM just swapped engines in the Pontiac Bonneville from the 3800 V6 to a V8. Impala NA V6 to a Supercharged V6. The new GTO, LT1 corvette engine with 350hp, need I go on...

Just a though/opinion. Don't hate me...
;) :D

Buying cars is an emotional decision for 99% of people. Cars unfortunately are seen as status symbols, and people buy the best (biggest, most powerful) they can afford. Gas mileage isn't as 'fun' of a number as HP. ALso, people don't pay much attention to it because they don't HAVE to. If gas was 5 bucks a gallon, logic would start to have a greater impact on car choices. Car makers have to improve every new model, and engine size/power is always bumped a bit. It's amazing that cars like the Accord are as fast as some old school muscle cars. Try to convince people that they don't need all that power... good luck! Fortunately, efficency has also improved, and their gas mileage is much better than muscle cars.

Hybrid cars are still too expensive to recoup the cost in saved gasoline. They will remain more or less a novelty until the technology improves and prices fall. However, the new Prius is supposed to be much better. Higher MPG, a few seconds quicker to 60, and much better looking.

BTW, why bother with all the fuss over hybrids when diesels are already so efficient? Maybe not so much as hybrids, but more so than gasoline engines, and they have much more power than the hybrids. Ever driven a VW TDI? :D How come there aren't any hybrid diesels? Seems an obvious combination. I guess shutting off a diesel engine at every stop light like the hybrids do now wouldn't really be ideal.

Sorry, I don't have anything to add to this topic. :p

However, on a totally unrelated topic, my Dad will be accompanying me to this week's Monday night meet in his '72 RX2. :)

Patrick, you have to come out now.

AutoXRacer

24th August 2003, 13:58

Tony, will you bring your car too?

Tony Orlando

24th August 2003, 14:17

Yep. My Dad lives right around the corner from Frogger's, and it happens to be his favorite place for game days. I told him that we'd be there Monday night, and he's interested in coming and checking everybody's cars out. I'll be arriving in my "Baby Viper" as usual. ;)

HAHAH, what a heated topic this has become! ;) :ohno:

Hrm... I'd like to see a big SUV with just a puny V6 or even a 4 banger... reason why they have big engines to begin with to haul it's heavy a$$ self first! As far as seeing hybrids on the road, yes I do see plenty... Yes, the world is in an everquest for more power... but more power = more $$.

Anyhoo... I'd love to see that RX2 :D See ya'll tomorrow night!

the reason nobody wants a diesel hybrid here in the U.S. is simple:diesel got a bad rep in the 70's a smelly, expensive alternative to regular gasoline. Diesel vehicles back then were underpowered at best, and left a nice black patch of soot on the rear bumper. In europe, diesel fuel is more commonplace because it is much more refined than it is in the states. Less emissions, more efficient etc. I believe in the next 10 years we will see a marked increase in the acceptance of diesel, or diesel hybrid vehicles. The TDI Jetta and Golf offer as much HP and Torque as gas engines with a much greater fuel economy. :)

I just thought to give you back the book asap after I finished reading it. PAW told me he was going to see you the next day (we met up at the Tavares Martin event in July).

I finally saw my first WRX STI today. :D At school driving around the parking garage looking for a spot. I almost ignored it because it was a wagon. I didn't know they were making STI in wagon form. Maybe it was a fake. :p It sure did have the huge hood scoop and pink badge on the rear.

The distance is too far for Patrick considering he has to go to Lake Mary after 8:30 to pick up his friend Chris, then go home, then drive all the way out to Oviedo. I can understand why he wouldn't want to go in this situation.

Storms are expected to be extremely strong this afternoon, so everybody be careful on your trek out there, Alafaya is under heavy construction (STILL) and has many hidden potholes that will be underwater. I was driving down it the other day, and bottomed out more than once.

I just spotted Abdula today at Valencia. Looks like he never sold his car and now it is turbocharged. It looks pretty mean with that intercooler on it now.
